Koukounaries Beach Skiathos: The Complete 2026 Guide (By Boat or Land)

Why Koukounaries Is Famous

Koukounaries (Greek for “pine cones”) is consistently rated one of the top beaches in the Mediterranean. At over 1,200 metres long with fine golden sand, it sits within a protected pine forest that reaches right down to the water’s edge — a rarity in the Greek islands. Behind the beach lies the Strofilia Lagoon, a protected wetland and bird sanctuary.

The beach sits on Skiathos’s southwestern coast, approximately 13 km from Skiathos Town. It’s the final stop on the island’s main bus route (Stop 26).

Getting to Koukounaries by Land

By Bus

The island bus runs from Skiathos Town to Koukounaries every 15–20 minutes in high season. Fare is €2 per person. The journey takes roughly 30 minutes. Buses get extremely crowded in July and August — expect to stand.

By Car or Scooter

There’s a large car park behind the beach, but it fills up by 10:30am in peak season. Scooters have an easier time finding spots, but dusty dirt tracks add to the chaos. Parking stress is one of the main reasons visitors opt for boat access instead.

Arriving by Boat — The Smarter Way

Koukounaries faces southwest and is well-sheltered from the prevailing northerly winds. The bay is deep enough for anchoring and the sandy bottom holds well.

Anchoring

Drop anchor in 3–6 metres of water approximately 50–100 metres from shore. The sandy seabed provides excellent holding. Swim to the beach from your boat, or use a tender if you have one. The water is shallow and calm — ideal for families.

Boat Rental

A 30HP boat from Skiathos Port reaches Koukounaries in approximately 40–45 minutes following the south coast. The route takes you past Megali Ammos, Achladies, Kanapitsa, Vromolimnos, and Troulos — giving you a scenic tour along the way.

Transfer

A private transfer from Skiathos Town to Koukounaries takes about 25–30 minutes and costs approximately €40–60 for up to 8 people. You choose your own departure and return time.

Combine With

  • Banana Beach (5 minutes west by boat)
  • Agia Eleni (3 minutes further west)
  • Mikri Banana (just past Banana, nudist-friendly)
  • Strofilia Lagoon (walk behind the beach, birdwatching)

Facilities at Koukounaries

Koukounaries is fully organized with:

  • Sunbeds and umbrellas for hire (€10–15 per set)
  • Multiple beach bars and tavernas
  • Showers and changing rooms
  • Wheelchair-accessible boardwalks
  • Lifeguard on duty (peak season)

  • Skippered day trips: Let our captain handle everything. Spend 2 hours at Koukounaries, then explore Banana, Agia Eleni, and hidden coves on the way back.
  • Water taxi drop-off: Private direct transfers. We’ll drop you right at the beach and pick you up whenever you’re ready — no bus crowds, no parking nightmare.

Best Time to Visit

  • June and September: Perfect. Warm water, manageable crowds, available parking — if you’re driving.
  • July and August: The beach is packed by 11am. Arrive before 9am or after 4pm for breathing room. By boat, you can arrive anytime and anchor further out for privacy.
  • May and October: Quiet, peaceful, and the water is still swimmable. Most facilities may be partially open.

Insider Tips

  • The northern end of the beach (closest to the pine forest) is slightly quieter.
  • There’s a small, lesser-known path at the southern end that leads to a viewpoint overlooking both Koukounaries and Banana beaches.
  • The lagoon behind the beach is worth a 15-minute walk — look for herons and terrapins.
  • Combine Koukounaries with lunch at one of the tavernas in the pine forest behind the beach — fresh grilled octopus and local Skiathos wine.
