About Kechria Beach
Kechria is one of the most beautiful and remote beaches on Skiathos. Located 11 km northwest of Skiathos Town on the island’s wild north coast, it’s a pebbled cove surrounded by towering pine-covered hills and mountains. It’s partly organized — remarkably, given its isolation — with a small taverna and sunbeds. The contrast of dark pebbles, bright turquoise water, and dense green pine forest makes it one of the most photogenic spots on the island.
Getting There
By Land
Kechria is accessible by a rough dirt track from the interior of the island. It’s a challenging drive — a 4x4 or scooter is recommended, and the road is not for the faint-hearted. The drive takes approximately 30–40 minutes from Skiathos Town on unpaved roads.
By Boat
This is by far the best way to reach Kechria. The beach faces northwest into a protected cove. From Skiathos Port, a 30HP rental boat reaches Kechria in approximately 35–40 minutes, going west along the north coast past Kastro and Ligaries. The approach from the water is spectacular — the pine-covered mountains dropping straight into the sea.
Transfer
A transfer from Skiathos Town takes about 30 minutes. Cost: approximately €45–55.
The Beach
Kechria is a mix of pebbles and coarse sand, approximately 250 metres long. The water is exceptionally clear with excellent visibility — some of the best snorkelling on the island. The pine forest comes right to the water’s edge, providing natural shade.
Facilities
- Sunbeds and umbrellas (limited, €8–10 per set)
- One traditional family-run taverna (the “modern facility” Greeka references) — fresh seafood, cold beer
- Nature-first beach — no extensive facilities
- No showers (bring fresh water to rinse)
Snorkelling
Kechria is a snorkeller’s paradise. The clear water, rocky edges, and minimal boat traffic mean marine life thrives. Expect visibility of 10–20 metres in calm conditions. The rocky headlands on both sides of the cove are the best spots.
Boat Anchoring Tips
The cove offers good shelter from northerly winds due to the surrounding hills. Anchor in 3–6 metres on a mix of sand and pebbles. The eastern side of the cove is slightly more sheltered.
Nearby Beaches to Combine
- Ligaries (1 km east along the coast, 5 minutes by boat) — similar beauty, sandy and pebbly
- Kastro (3 km east, 10 minutes by boat) — the beach below the medieval castle
- Mikros Aselinos (2 km west, 5 minutes by boat) — smaller, quieter version of Aselinos
- Megali Aselinos (3 km west) — long, wild sandy beach
- Krifi Ammos (further west) — isolated sandy cove
