The Mamma Mia Boat Trip Itinerary: Skiathos to Skopelos

The Most Iconic Boat Trip in the Aegean

When Mamma Mia filmed on location in 2007, Skiathos and Skopelos became instant icons of the Greek island dream. The clifftop chapel of Agios Ioannis — where Sophie and Sky famously wed — became one of the most photographed locations in Greece. And yes, you can reach it entirely by boat.

Departure: Skiathos Old Port

Your journey begins at Skiathos’ old port — arrive 15 minutes early for your safety briefing and to meet your skipper (if you’ve booked one). We recommend departing by 9:00am to avoid the midday heat and arrive at Skopelos Town before the day-tripper crowds.

Journey time: ~50 minutes at moderate speed in the Compass 165 or Marinco RIB.

Stop 1: Glysteri Bay (20 min from port)

A secluded pebble beach on Skiathos’ eastern coast, rarely visited by tourists. Drop anchor, swim, snorkel. This is where we recommend your first proper stop.

Stop 2: Skopelos Town (50 min from port)

The capital of Skopelos island is a picture-perfect cube of white-washed houses cascading down to the harbour. There’s a quiet charm here that Skiathos Town’s bustle doesn’t quite match — slower pace, narrower alleys, more cats sleeping on doorsteps.

  • Moor at the main quay (free for day visitors)
  • Visit the harbour church (filmed in the movie)
  • Lunch at a harbourside taverna — try the famous Skopelos cheese pie

Stop 3: Agios Ioannis Chapel — The Mamma Mia Church (30 min from Skopelos Town)

The 215-step climb is worth every step. The tiny whitewashed chapel sits at the tip of a sea rock with sheer drops to the Aegean on three sides. Views are staggering.

Practical info: The chapel is small — arrive early or late to avoid queues. Swimming directly below is possible and excellent.

Return: Sunset Route

We recommend the northern return route past Agnontas bay for a different perspective on Skopelos’ coastline before crossing back to Skiathos. The light on the return leg is usually extraordinary — late afternoon sun hitting the west-facing cliffs at a low angle.

Estimated total trip time: 8–9 hours. This is a full-day adventure. Depart 9am, return by 6pm. Book the Mamma Mia private tour →
