Is It Safe to Drive a Boat in Greece? A Beginner's Sea Safety Guide

The Short Answer: Yes, With Preparation

The Aegean Sea around Skiathos is generally safe for recreational boating in summer — but the Aegean is not a lake. The famous Meltemi wind can push conditions from flat calm to choppy in a matter of hours, especially in July and August.

This guide gives you the honest picture.

Understanding the Meltemi Wind

The Meltemi is a strong, dry north wind that sweeps down from the Balkans and dominates the Aegean in summer, typically from late June through August. It’s intimidating on paper, but perfectly predictable once you know how to read the signs — whitecaps forming, flag direction, the wind line moving across the water.

Key facts:

  • Strongest between 12:00–18:00, typically calms by evening
  • Beaufort 4–6 is common; above 5 we do not operate
  • Always check windy.com or poseidon.hcmr.gr before departure

Required Safety Equipment

Greek maritime law requires all rental boats to carry:

  • Life jackets for every passenger (we provide all sizes)
  • Fire extinguisher
  • First aid kit
  • Flare signals
  • Anchor and rope
  • VHF radio (on larger vessels)

We check and restock all equipment before every rental.

The Safety Briefing

Every rental starts with a mandatory safety briefing from one of our team — usually at the boat, on the water, so you can hear the engine and feel the controls. We cover starting and stopping, throttle control, anchoring in sand vs rock, reading depth, and emergency procedures. No jargon — just clear, practical information you’ll actually remember.

What to Do in an Emergency

In the rare event of engine failure, call us immediately on our emergency line — we monitor all rentals via GPS tracker and can pinpoint your location within seconds. For serious emergencies at sea, the Hellenic Coast Guard emergency line is 108 (free from any phone, on any Greek mobile network).

Our Verdict for Beginners

If you’re nervous, start with a no-license boat on a calm morning. Stick to the south coast. By lunchtime you’ll be confident enough to explore further. We’ve never had a rental where a beginner wasn’t completely comfortable within the first 30 minutes on the water. See our no-license fleet →
