The 6 Best Sunset Spots Around Skiathos — By Boat

The Aegean at Golden Hour

There’s a reason photographers and honeymooners specifically book Skiathos in late summer — the sunsets here are extraordinary. The right anchorage puts you in the middle of a colour show that no hotel balcony can match.

Here are our six favourite spots, ranked by sunset quality.

1. Kastro Headland — The Classic

The rocky northwestern tip of Skiathos, beneath the ancient ruins of Kastro, faces almost due west. Anchor in the cove below, climb the rocks (5 minutes, easy scramble), and watch the sun drop into the open Aegean. No distractions. No music from a beach bar. Just orange light on ancient stone.

Best for: Photography, couples, history lovers.

2. Big Island (Megali Nisos) — Open Water Drama

A small uninhabited island just off Skiathos’ northern coast — you’ve probably seen it from Lalaria and wondered what’s on it (answer: nothing, which is the point). The exposed western side gives you a full 180° of open Aegean. The swell is mild in August; the colours are intense.

Best for: Groups who want open water energy.

3. Banana Beach Rocks — Surprise View West

The rocky western extension of Banana Beach is usually deserted by late afternoon — everyone’s gone back to their hotels by 5pm. Anchor in 3 metres of stunningly clear water and watch the sun fade over the headland. You’ll have it to yourselves.

Best for: Combining with an afternoon beach stop.

4. Koukounaries Lagoon — Sheltered and Peaceful

The sheltered lagoon behind Koukounaries beach glows amber at sunset — the pine forest on the headland filters the light in a way that feels almost subtropical. Shallow enough to stand, calm enough to swim. Completely protected from any swell, which makes it the safest sunset spot on this list.

Best for: Families, children, first-timers.

5. Tsougria Channel — Silhouette Perfection

The channel between Skiathos and Tsougria island creates a natural frame — and if you get the positioning right, it’s absurdly photogenic. Position your boat in the middle of the channel and the setting sun backlights both islands simultaneously. Silhouettes of the pine coast to port, Tsougria’s bare hills to starboard.

Best for: Instagram. Obviously.

6. Skiathos Old Port — Town Lights Edition

Return to port just before sunset and anchor in the bay looking back at the old town. The warm light hitting the white buildings, the boats coming in for the evening, the first taverna lights flickering on along the waterfront — if you’ve been on the water all day, this is the reward.

Best for: End-of-day mooring, cold drink in hand. Book a sunset cruise →
