About Xanemos Beach
Xanemos is one of the few accessible beaches on Skiathos’s rugged north coast, located approximately 3 km northeast of Skiathos Town on the Lazareta peninsula — the same peninsula that houses Skiathos International Airport. It’s a sandy beach with a unique backdrop: depending on the wind direction, aircraft approach the runway directly over the water, creating one of the most unusual beach experiences in Greece.
Getting There
By Land
- Minibus: There is a dedicated minibus service from Skiathos Town to Xanemos, running up to 6 round trips daily during summer. Check the schedule — it’s less frequent than the main bus route.
- Car/Scooter: 8-minute drive. The road passes the airport.
- Walk: Approximately 40 minutes from town — possible but exposed.
By Boat
Xanemos faces north-northeast. Anchoring here depends heavily on weather — in calm conditions (under 2 Beaufort), it’s fine in 3–5 metres on sand. In any north or northeast wind, anchoring is not advisable as the bay is exposed. From Skiathos Port, a rental boat reaches Xanemos in approximately 15–20 minutes by going east around the Bourtzi peninsula and then north.
Transfer
A transfer from Skiathos Town takes about 12 minutes. Cost: approximately €25–30.
The Beach
Xanemos is approximately 300 metres of sand. The exposed north-coast location means it can be breezier than south-coast beaches. The water is clear but cooler due to north-coast currents.
The Airport Experience
Xanemos’s proximity to Skiathos Airport is its defining feature. On landing approach days, aircraft pass low over the beach — a spectacle that draws planespotters from around the world. When aircraft take off (depending on wind), they climb out over the sea. It’s loud but thrilling.
Facilities
- Sunbeds and umbrellas (limited, €8–10 per set)
- One beach bar (seasonal)
- No permanent taverna — bring your own food or snacks from the bar
- Showers
Nudism
Certain sections of Xanemos are known for nudism, particularly the quieter ends. The beach is large enough that different sections cater to different preferences.
Boat Anchoring Tips
Weather-dependent. Only anchor at Xanemos in calm conditions with no northerly wind. The bay is directly exposed to the north and can become rough quickly. Check the forecast carefully. When conditions are calm, anchor in 3–5 metres on sand.
Nearby Beaches to Combine
- Lalaria (accessible by continuing north around Cape Gournes, approximately 25 minutes) — the famous boat-only beach
- Megas Gialos (west along the north coast, accessible by boat) — remote, unorganized
- Psarochoma (east of Xanemos) — isolated cove
- Skiathos Town (return south around the peninsula, 15 minutes) — for lunch and supplies
