Megali Ammos Beach Skiathos: The Closest Beach to Town — Complete Guide

About Megali Ammos

Megali Ammos (meaning “Big Sand”) is the closest major beach to Skiathos Town, just 2 km west of the port. It’s a long, wide stretch of golden sand that runs parallel to the main coast road, backed by hotels, tavernas, and beach bars. Its proximity to town makes it exceptionally popular — at times overwhelmingly so — but it remains a convenient, well-equipped beach with a lively atmosphere.

Getting There

By Land

  • Walking: 20–25 minutes from Skiathos Town along the coastal road. The most direct route is via the road to the airport, then west along the coast.
  • Bus: Stop 6 on the main route. About 5 minutes from town.
  • Car/Scooter: 3-minute drive. Limited roadside parking.

By Boat

Megali Ammos faces southeast into a long, open bay. Anchoring is in 3–6 metres on sand. From Skiathos Port, a rental boat reaches Megali Ammos in just 5–8 minutes — practically around the corner.

Transfer

A transfer from the port takes under 5 minutes. Cost: approximately €15–20.

The Beach

Megali Ammos is approximately 600 metres of sand. The water is clear and shallow near the shore. The beach is backed by the coast road, which means some traffic noise — but the convenience is unmatched.

Facilities

  • Sunbeds and umbrellas (€8–12 per set)
  • Multiple beach bars — some with DJs in the afternoon
  • Several tavernas and restaurants directly on or behind the beach
  • Showers and changing rooms
  • Lifeguard on duty (peak season)

Beach Bars and Atmosphere

Megali Ammos has one of the more active beach bar scenes on the island. Several bars play music throughout the day, and it’s a popular sunset drinks spot. The atmosphere is lively but not as intense as Banana.

Boat Anchoring Tips

The bay is open to the southeast. In northerly winds (the prevailing direction), it’s well-protected. In a southeasterly, it can get choppy — check the forecast. Anchor in 3–5 metres on sand. The eastern end (closer to town) is slightly quieter.

Nearby Beaches to Combine

  • Ftelia (500m west, 2 minutes by boat) — small, quiet beach with a tiny harbour
  • Vassilias (3 km west) — organized sandy cove
  • Skiathos Town (2 km east) — Old Port and Bourtzi peninsula

What Sea Skiathos Offers

  • Self-drive no-license boat rental: Just 5–8 minutes from port. The shortest boat trip you can take.
  • Quick transfer: Direct transfers from the port. Actually faster than walking.
  • Sunset cruise stop: Combine an evening at Megali Ammos beach bars with a sunset cruise back to port.

Best Time to Visit

  • Morning (before 10am): Quiet, calm water, sunbeds available.
  • Late afternoon–sunset: The beach bars come alive, and the sunset views over the bay are excellent.
  • June and September: Manageable crowds, warm water.
  • July–August: Packed by mid-morning. The proximity to town means it fills up fast. If you want space, arrive early or visit on a weekday.
