Ligaries Beach Skiathos: The Turquoise Cove Between Kastro and Kechria

About Ligaries Beach

Ligaries sits on Skiathos’s northwest coast at approximately 11 km from Skiathos Town, positioned between Kastro Beach to the east and Kechria to the west. It’s part of a spectacular stretch of north-coast beaches that includes some of the island’s most beautiful and least-visited spots. With turquoise water, a mix of sand and pebbles, and imposing green hills behind, Ligaries rewards the trip north.

Getting There

By Land

A rough dirt road leads to Ligaries from the island’s interior. The drive is challenging — 4x4 or quad bike recommended. It’s approximately 25–30 minutes from Skiathos Town on unpaved roads.

By Boat

This is the best and most scenic way to arrive. Ligaries faces northwest into a small, partly-sheltered cove. From Skiathos Port, a 30HP rental boat reaches Ligaries in approximately 30–35 minutes following the north coast past Kastro.

Transfer

A transfer from Skiathos Town takes about 25 minutes. Cost: approximately €40–50.

The Beach

Ligaries is approximately 200 metres of mixed sand and pebbles with vivid turquoise water. The imposing green hills directly behind create one of the most dramatic backdrops on the north coast. The beach is partly organized — a seasonal beach bar provides basic services.

Facilities

  • Limited sunbeds (€8–10 per set, seasonal)
  • Seasonal beach bar with drinks and light snacks
  • No full restaurant
  • No showers
  • Natural shade from the hillside vegetation in the afternoon

Snorkelling

The rocky edges of the cove offer excellent snorkelling. The water is exceptionally clear with visibility often exceeding 15 metres. The underwater rock formations around the headlands are home to a variety of fish and marine life.

Boat Anchoring Tips

The cove offers partial shelter from northerly winds. Anchor in 3–5 metres on a sandy/pebbly bottom. The cove is small — space for 3–5 boats comfortably.

Nearby Beaches to Combine

  • Kastro (2 km east, 8 minutes by boat) — the beach below the medieval castle
  • Kechria (1 km west, 3 minutes by boat) — pine-backed pebble cove with taverna
  • Mikros Aselinos (3 km west) — small, quiet sandy cove
  • Megali Aselinos (4 km west) — long, wild sandy beach

What Sea Skiathos Offers

  • Self-drive no-license boat rental: Part of our north-coast route. 30–35 minutes from port. Combine with Kastro and Kechria.

Best Time to Visit

  • Calm, clear days (wind under 2–3 Beaufort): The north coast sets the terms. Pick your weather.
  • June and September: Best conditions, fewest boats.
  • Morning: Glassy water, spectacular light on the green hills.
  • Midday: The turquoise colour of the water is at its most vivid.
  • Avoid: Northerly or northwesterly wind above 3 Beaufort.
