Psarochoma Beach Skiathos: The Isolated Cove on the Northeast Coast

About Psarochoma Beach

Psarochoma is a hidden sandy cove on Skiathos’s northeastern coast, approximately 3.5 km from Skiathos Town. It sits in an isolated cove completely surrounded by imposing green hills, with deep blue water and a wild, untouched atmosphere. The name suggests an old fishing spot (“psarochoma” roughly translates to “fish place”) — and it remains one of the most genuinely isolated beaches on the island.

Getting There

By Land

An unmarked footpath descends from the road near the airport area. The hike is about 20–30 minutes and is challenging — steep, rocky, and unshaded. Few visitors find it or attempt it.

By Boat

Psarochoma faces northeast and is exposed. It can only be visited in calm conditions (wind under 2 Beaufort). From Skiathos Port, a rental boat reaches Psarochoma in approximately 15–20 minutes, going east from the port and then north along the coast past the airport peninsula.

Transfer

A transfer from Skiathos Town takes about 15 minutes in calm conditions. Cost: approximately €20–30.

The Beach

Psarochoma is approximately 100 metres of sand in a deep, narrow cove. The water is deep blue — darker and cooler than the south-coast beaches due to the north-coast currents and depth. There are no facilities and no development. The hills around the cove are steep and green, creating a natural amphitheatre.

Facilities

  • None — no sunbeds, no umbrellas, no bar, no toilets, no shade
  • Bring everything. A beach tent or umbrella is essential.
  • The hills provide some late-afternoon shade.

Snorkelling

The rocky edges of the cove offer good snorkelling. The water is deep and clear. The isolation means marine life has been relatively undisturbed.

Boat Anchoring Tips

Weather-dependent. The cove faces northeast — exposed to prevailing winds. Only visit in completely calm conditions. When safe, anchor in 3–5 metres. The cove is narrow and deep — anchoring geometry can be tricky. Experience recommended.

Nearby Beaches to Combine

  • Xanemos (nearby to the northwest) — sandy, partly organized, nudist-friendly
  • Glyfoneri (nearby to the south) — remote rocky beach
  • Lalaria (accessible by continuing north around Cape Gournes, ~20 minutes) — the famous boat-only beach
  • Skiathos Town (return south, 15 minutes)

What Sea Skiathos Offers

  • Self-drive no-license boat rental: For experienced, weather-aware self-drivers only. Our team provides a full safety briefing.
  • Skippered north-coast exploration: Your captain will determine the best north-coast stops for the day based on conditions. Psarochoma is visited when the weather cooperates.
  • Water taxi: Weather-dependent transfers.

Best Time to Visit

  • Perfectly calm days only: Essential. Wind must be minimal with no northeast component.
  • June and September: Best weather windows for the north coast.
  • Morning: Calmest conditions. Beautiful morning light in the cove.
  • Avoid: Wind. Don’t be tempted to take chances on the north coast.
