About Glyfoneri Beach
Glyfoneri is a remote, pebbled beach on Skiathos’s northeastern coast, approximately 5 km northeast of Skiathos Town. It’s completely non-organized, wild, and rarely visited — one of the most secluded spots on the island’s north side. The beach is pebbly and rocky, surrounded by rugged, undeveloped hills. It offers absolute peace and a sense of discovery.
Getting There
By Land
A rough track leads to Glyfoneri from the east coast road. The track is unpaved and challenging — a 4x4 or quad bike is recommended. Few visitors attempt the land route.
By Boat
Glyfoneri faces northeast and is exposed to the prevailing northerlies. It can only be visited by boat in calm conditions (wind under 2 Beaufort). From Skiathos Port, a rental boat reaches Glyfoneri in approximately 20–25 minutes by heading east around the Bourtzi peninsula and then north past the airport peninsula.
Transfer
A transfer from Skiathos Town takes about 18 minutes in calm conditions. Cost: approximately €25–35.
The Beach
Glyfoneri is approximately 150 metres of pebbles and rocks. The water is clear and deepens relatively quickly. There are no facilities, no shade structures, and no development. The atmosphere is wild and raw — this is nature unmediated.
Facilities
- None whatsoever — no sunbeds, no umbrellas, no bar, no toilets, no shade
- Bring everything. A beach tent or umbrella is essential.
- Water shoes recommended — the pebbles get hot
Why Visit Glyfoneri
This isn’t a comfort beach. It’s a wilderness experience. You visit Glyfoneri for the solitude, the rugged beauty, and the feeling of having the entire northeast coast to yourself. If you want sunbeds, a beach bar, and facilities, any south-coast beach will serve you better. If you want to feel like the only person on the island, this is the place.
Boat Anchoring Tips
Highly weather-dependent. Glyfoneri faces directly northeast — the worst possible exposure for the prevailing wind. Only anchor here in completely calm conditions with no northeast wind component. When conditions are right, anchor in 3–5 metres on a pebbly bottom. Do not attempt in wind over 2 Beaufort.
Nearby Beaches to Combine
- Lalaria (accessible by continuing north around Cape Gournes, approximately 15 minutes) — the famous boat-only beach
- Xanemos (on the other side of the airport peninsula) — sandy, partly organized
- Psarochoma (nearby to the south) — isolated sandy cove
- Skiathos Town (return south, 20 minutes) — for civilization
